Making life easier…one baby step at a time
During our Nurture Me group* we talk about many things, including how mothers often feel like we’re not good enough, strong enough, [insert adjective-of-your-choice here] enough. There are stories of how moms feel unqualified to speak up or ask questions when medical professionals are talking (down) to them (or AT them). Some talk of feeling challenged or judged by partners, family members or even other mothers.
Of course, we don’t feel like this all the time. Some days are better than others. We usually smile at our babies (however old they are). We play with them. Sometimes we don’t feel like it. We have to remember to shower, nap and do something for ourselves once-in-a-while. A walk. A date with our lover. A date with a girlfriend. Yoga. A workout. A cup of tea. It may also be necessary to call a professional mental health professional**.
I was thinking today, amid more of these stories: we may not have an MD or a PhD after our name (although some of the moms and dads that come to BinC do!). We know ourselves. We know our babies. We may ask questions, get information, invite advice, consider opinions. But at the end of the day, we have more letters after our name than most: our credentials. Those letters? M.O.T.H.E.R.
*Nurture Me takes place on most Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 am, $15 per meeting. Please check the Babies in Common calendar before you leave your house to confirm it is still scheduled.
**if you need a recommendation for a mental health professional, please let me know.
